Roads and Railways

The motorway “Aleksandar the Great” and the railway line, which passes through MGB is part of the European corridor E 75, connecting more countries from Norway to Greece, passing the mayor cities. It crosses the country from north to south, starting at Kumanovo border and ending at the Evzoni-Bogorodica border crossing with Greece near Gevgelija in length of 205 km¹. As a part of the Pan-European corridor X (along with route E70) and connection among Macedonia’s biggest cities, it is one of vital highways for Macedonian infrastructure, and significant works are undergoing for its reconstruction and enhancement.

Another important road is part of the corridor VIII, which is 1,500 km (932 mi) long, connecting Durrës – Tirana – Skopje – Sofia – Plovdiv – Burgas – Varna. This corridor in the entire length within the Macedonian territory from Kumanovo – Skopje – Tetovo – Gostivar – Kicevo to Ohrid is highway road of 210 km¹  and  from Kumanovo to Kriva Palanka is express road in length of 62 km¹.

A significant part of 10 km¹ of the Skopje Ring Road is passing through the municipality of Gazi Baba. This road is part of the E 65 European route.

Another advantage is that the transport center is only 500 meters away from MGB. The international bus and train stations are placed there, and also the city bus station.

Airport

The airport Skopje is only 15km from the Municipality of Gazi Baba.

The Republic of Macedonia has two international airports – at Skopje and Ohrid – which can accommodate all types of modern aircraft, except inter-continental flights.

The Turkish company TAV took over the management of both airports for the next 20 years. A number of local and foreign carriers offer direct and indirect flights from Skopje airport to major European cities. During 2011, TAV Airports expanded Skopje Airport with a new 40 thousand square meter terminal building to accommodate 6 passenger bridges and the runway as well as increasing the cargo and car park capacities.

A 40 thousand ton capacity cargo hangar, 300 vehicle car park, 23 check-in counters and 500 meter expansion to the runway were also amongst the works completed.

Telecommunications

There are various telecommunication operators that operate in the municipality of Gazi Baba.

Regarding the telecommunications operators, there is a great demand on nearly all telecommunications services – telephony (mobile and fixed), internet (cable broadband, ADSL, DSL, wireless, VOIP, broadband access in the fixed networks, etc).

At this point, all telecommunications service operators on the market operate in the municipality of Gazi Baba and the city of Skopje.

The first two operators cover almost the entire city of Skopje with heating energy. In respect to this, almost all urban settlements in the municipality of Gazi Baba is connect to the heating energy network.

TE-TO Corp. Skopje is the largest independent energy producer in Macedonia that manages the gas power plant located in MGB with a combined cycle of electricity and heat production.

EVN a private electricity distribution operator, covers the territory of the city of Skopje and the municipality of Gazi Baba. EVN distribution in MGB has a 320 transformer plants of different voltage levels with highest quality standards for distribution of electricity to all business and resident entities in MGB.

NOMAGAS is a state company, and is operating the gasification system in MGB, primarily for the needs of energy and industrial facilities. The gasification system in MGB is operative almost two decades, mainly for the industrial sector from the municipality.

Public Utility Companies

In MGB following public utility companies are operating:

  • Vodovod & Kanalizacija Skopje – City Utility company responsible for water-supply system, drainage and waste water collection and sewerage system in urban settlements of the MGB. Currently is in process of construction the waste water treatment plant at the territory of MGB;
  • JKP Gazi Baba 2007 -MGB Utility company is responsible for water-supply system, drainage and waste water collection and sewerage system, and two WWTP in rural settlements of the municipality;
  • Komunalna higiena Skopje – City Utility company responsible for waste collection and disposal in the MGB;
  • Drisla Skopje – City Utility company responsible for disposal of waste at the Drisla landfill for the entire Skopje’s region;
  • Ulici i Patista Skopje – City Utility company responsible for construction and maintenance of the city boulevard streets;
  • JSP Skopje – City Utility company responsible for public transport and mobility of the residents in the Skopje’s region;

Electronic Payment Methods

Credit card use has gained in popularity, and the majority of consumer retailers offer this service. Local banks offer online banking services, debit card services, and various forms of electronic payment for utility and telephone charges.

Currency

The official currency in RN Macedonia is the Macedonian denar (MKD). The denar is circulated in notes of MKD 10, MKD 50, MKD 100, MKD 500, MKD 1,000 and MKD 2,000, and coins of MKD 1, MKD 2, MKD 5, MKD 10 and MKD 50.
